Music Therapy
Music therapy is a psychotherapy method that uses music as a healing agent.
The therapeutic effect of music on the human organism has been known since ancient times. In ancient times and in Middle Ages, the faith in the healing influence of music was extremely loud. This is indicated by the literary and medical evidence of healing chorea, with the help of music.
There are four main areas of therapeutic action of music therapy:
- Emotional activation during verbal psychotherapy;
-The development of interpersonal skills (communicative functions and abilities);
- Regulatory impact on Psycho-autonomic processes;
- Improving the aesthetic needs.
As a mechanisms of therapeutic action of music therapy includes: a cathartic, emotional relaxation, regulation of emotional state, facilitating awareness of one’s own experiences, the confrontation with life’s problems, increased social activity, acquisition of new means of emotional expression, facilitating the formation of new relationships and attitudes.
Music therapy exists in two basic forms: active and receptive.
Active music therapy is a therapeutic field, an active musical activity: playing, fantasy, improvisation with the human voice and selected instruments.
Receptive music therapy involves a process of perception of music for therapeutic reasons. In turn, receptive music therapy exists in three forms:
- Communicative (joint listening to music, aimed at maintaining mutual contacts, mutual understanding and trust),
- Reactive (directed pas achieving catharsis)
- Regulatory (aid to reduce mental stress).
We recommend professionals in the anti-stress program using both forms of music therapy.
Receptive music therapy is often used. Group members listen to specially selected musical pieces, and then discuss their own experiences, memories, thoughts, associations and fantasies, emerging from them in the course of listening. At one lesson, listening, as a rule, three pieces or less complete passage (10-15 minutes each).
The music program is based on gradual change of mood, dynamics and tempo together with their different emotional pressures. The first piece should create a certain atmosphere for the whole class, to show the mood of group members, establish contacts and to put in music classes, to prepare for further listening. This is a quiet piece, distinguished by a relaxing effect. The second part – a dynamic, dramatic, intense, bears the brunt, its function is to stimulate intense emotions, memories, associations of projective character of one’s own life. The third piece must relieve the tension, to create an atmosphere of peace. It can be a calm, relaxing or, conversely, energetic, giving charge of cheerfulness, optimism and energy.
You can use the active version of the music therapy. It requires the simplest musical instruments. Group participants are invited to express their feelings or to hold a dialogue with any member of the group with the selected musical instruments.
Alternatively, active music therapy can be considered choral singing.
