What Is Organic Personality Disorder

It is believed that organic personality disorders occur in 5-10% of epileptic patients with disease duration of more than 10 years. Perhaps there is an inverse correlation between the degree of growth disorders and the frequency of seizures.

What triggers an organic personality disorder:

The cause is epilepsy, severe and repeated head injuries, encephalitis, cerebral palsy, joined by somatic disorders.

Organic personality disorder symptoms:

Six months or more are marked characterological changes that are expressed either as a whole in bringing premorbid personality traits, or the appearance of torpid, viscosity. In an emotional background, the symptom is either unproductive euphoria (Moriah), or dysphoria. Often in the later stages there is emotional lability or apathy. Affect the threshold is low, and little incentive can cause an outbreak of aggression, in general, being out of control impulses and urges. There is no forecast of their own behavior towards others, is characterized by suspicion and paranoid. Stereotyped utterances are characterized by flat and monotonous jokes. Although the early stages of memory disorders are not typical, they can progress, and in this case, you should talk about dementia.

Organic personality disorder diagnosis:

It is based on identifying the underlying disease and the typical emotional, cognitive and characterological changes. In addition to anamnestic data or other evidence of disease, injury or brain dysfunction, accurate diagnosis requires the presence of two or more features:

1) a significant reduction in the ability to cope with purposeful activity;
2) emotional lability (from euphoria to dysphoria), sometimes apathy;
3) expression of needs and desires arise without consideration of the consequences or social conventions (anti-social orientation);
4) suspicious or paranoid ideation (usually abstract content);
5) change in the rate of speech production, viscosity and hypergraphs;
6) changes in sexual behavior.

 Differential diagnosis
It should be differentiated from dementia, in which individual violations are combined frequently with impaired memory, dementia with the exception of Pick’s disease. The most accurate organic personality disorder is differentiated from dementia based on neuropsychological study of neurological data, EEG and CT scan.

Treatment of Organic personality disorder:

Treatment is based on the use of nootropics (nootropil, Phenibut, glutamic acid, entsefabol, aminalona) in combination with drugs that help control impulses: carbamazepine, lithium (lithium carbonate, kontemnol, litinol), beta-blockers, low doses of neuroleptics.
