The Psychology of Competitiveness – What Drives Us to Be Better Than Others

Published on Sunday, March 18th, 2012 at 10:02 am and is filed under Self Improvement

If we, humans were simpler creatures, we would like animals, acting, being guided solely by two instincts: survival and reproduction. We could eat as much food as necessary to our bodies, and spend energy only for the protection of family and hunting. However, we have evolved, we go to the gym and eat meal at the rate to take in more calories than wasting each day.

We choose it because we want the best, and here it intervenes the psychology that makes us do what we do.

At all times, some people are always trying to be better than others at least in some way,but necessarily better. Certainly, few people born with the idea, no matter what, to be worse than the others. And even if we imagine that there are such, in any case, people have one thing in common, motivation of achievements or failures.

Oddly? This is only at first glance. We’re always everywhere and always love to ostentatious be proud, and proud again – to feel a sense of pride, mixed from states of superiority, correctness and coquetry. Do not confuse it with pride - satisfaction with the achievements (motivation of achievements).

This is certainly just the mask hands of the master - it is an elegant tool for the game called “life”, but for others it became a sense of justifying its existence. Some “are dancing and singing,” enjoying the success, and some ”are limping and howling” relishing failure. How true it was noted by sages: “If is something I don’t like, I change it, expressing dissatisfaction with words - is meaningless.” Some of us go up the ladder of success, the others down, others are moving horizontally, and others jump on the fourth place.

But no matter what movements we make, I am sure every one of us lives the spirit of a winner, every one of us likes to win victories, each of us is a hero. Why not? Otherwise, occur various internal conflicts, and is so boring …

Another matter, how much is our heroism we actually use to achieve our goals. What are the obstacles on the path to professionalism? Fear, laziness, insecurity, ignorance, indolence, ingenuity? No. After all, for others - this is not a hindrance. Should be only one, but very important thing. Energy. The energy to overcome inertia - the fuel for future victories.

The powerful energy is born in order to achieve the great goal, the one who wants to achieve it, is looking for ways to do so, as the one who “scored” – is looking for the causes.Where do we get this wonderful fuel?

  • The nature (it is necessary to know what to do)
  • The people ( which)
  • You (have to know how)

Here, we come to the most interesting part. What is needed in order to be successful, in other words, to become a pro?

As strange it would sound – it is your desire, but not simple, but insistent, and it would be even steeper with the signs of intelligent obstinacy.

I recall the words of sixteen American President Abraham Lincoln:

“If you really, want something badly, then the case has already been done for more than half.”
